History


Longmeadow is an area that is rich in Puritan history. In 1636, the Puritan leader, William Pynchon, led an expedition to establish a Puritan plantation. Pynchon drew up an agreement with the area natives to purchase the land that is now known as Longmeadow. Originally, the land was used as a communal pasture, ideal for grazing the settlers livestock. Eventually the land was distributed to the residents as farm lots. Over time Longmeadow grew providing a safe and prosperous community with a strong economic base.

These areas include over 750 acres and border on the idyllic Connecticut River. In the conservation areas it is not uncommon to run across a wide range of wildlife including deer, beaver, wild turkeys, foxes and eagles.

Those interested in beautiful fall foliage and a seasonal escape may want to travel eastward to East Longmeadow. The Bluebird Acres farm located in East Longmeadow is reported to having some of the areas most beautiful fall colors. Families may enjoy taking a walk around the orchards and visiting the Apple Cider Mill.

For an enjoyable shopping experience in a charming historic district visit Longmeadow's Historic Town Common. The area known as "The Longmeadow Shops" dates back to before 1900. Vistors to the commons can enjoy a range of restaurants, stores and small boutiques.
